City History

The Township of Eagan was established in 1860 on the southern banks of the Mississippi River. Named after the first chairman of the Board of Supervisors for the Township - Patrick Eagan - Eagan was primarily a community of farmers for the first several decades after being founded. At one time, Eaganā€™s onion crop earned it the nickname ā€œThe Onion Capital of the United States,ā€ a status the area maintained until 1930. In terms of population, the township grew slowly until the 1950s. During that decade, improvements to the interstate highway system helped to prompt the transition from an agricultural community into a thriving suburb.
