Local Government

Fridley operates with a City Council that consists of four members and the Mayor. Each official is elected, but are not city employees. They are responsible for setting the policies for the operation of the city. The day-to-day operations are overseen by the City Manager who is appointed by the City Council; they are also responsible for overseeing the activities of all 8 departments.

City History

In 1847, John Banfill settled in what was referred to as Manomin, which now resides as t the Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts. In 1851, Abram M. Fridley, for whom the city was named, settled in Manomin and by 1879, the name was changed to Fridley. Fridley was first incorporated into a village in 1949, with the first mayor being appointed who also served as fire and police chief. Finally in 1957, Friday became a charter city and experienced an industrial boom. Within three years the city population grew to over 15,000 residents.
