Hackensack

Hackensack is a small town in north central Minnesota with a population of about 300 people. Part of Cass County, Hackensack has the luxury of being within a ten-mile radius of over 100 different lakes. During the warmer months, there is plenty of fun to be had in this small town community. Hackensack claims to be the birthplace of Lucette, Paul Bunyan’s sweetheart. The community even celebrates Sweetheart Days every July, including games, food, and a parade!

 

Recreation

Located just off Birch Lake, there is plenty of fun to be had on the water. From fishing to water sports there is something for every water lover here. The famous Paul Bunyan State trail that runs from Bemidji to Brainerd runs through Hackensack giving residents a great trail to hike and bike along. During the colder months, there is still much to do in the area such as snowmobiling, ice fishing, and cross-country skiing!

 

Shopping

Shopping in a small town has a quaint vibe to it and Hackensack is no different. From stores such the Piecemaker’s Quilt Shop to the Boutique by the Beach there are many unique finds here. If you choose to venture out, there are many resorts in the area with various shopping opportunities. The city does feature their own grocery store, Mark’s Market, but if you are looking for bigger stores, Brainerd and Bemidji are both under an hour away.

 

Dining

Although the city of Hackensack is only home to around 300 residents there are some great options to grab a drink and a bite to eat. If you’re in the mood for pizza, stop by Happy Pizza and grab a few slices. Birchwood Char House and Bar has great food and drink options you can enjoy on their outdoor patio! If you are looking for something a little different check out the Charng Thai Restaurant and enjoy their authentic Thai food.

 

Green/Environmental

With all of the beautiful natural resources in Cass County to maintain, the county works with Hackensack to implement environmentally friendly and sustainable policies. From comprehensive recycling and composting to utilizing sustainable building practices and more, the city and county are both working toward increasing the quality of life for all residents.

 

Schools

Hackensack is served by the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley School District. The schools in this district include Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Elementary School and Walker-Hackensack-Akeley High School.

Local Government

The Hackensack City Council consists of the Mayor and four additional council members. This governing body is responsible for all administrative, legislative, and budgetary oversight concerning city operations. City Council meetings are held at the city hall on the second Monday of every month.

 

City History

The city is actually named after Hackensack, New Jersey, and the post office has been in operation since 1888. The residents of this small, bustling town first described their hometown as the home of Lucette, Paul Bunyan’s sweetheart in the 1940s. Brainerd and Bemidji both claim to be the birthplace of Paul Bunyan and Hackensack is located right in the middle of the two cities.
