The city of Hugo began as a 3-square mile village that has grown into a 36-square mile commuter town north of the Twin Cities. Since its meager beginnings through 1972, Hugo existed as a farming and railroad community. At that time, the Oneka Township was consolidated with the then Village of Hugo. From 1972 onward Hugo has grown into a mostly suburban city of over 13,000 residents.
