Independence in conveniently located between two larger retail centers in Delano and Maple Plain. Though Independence claims a small shopping scene including Mama’s Happy home goods store, Delano and Maple Plain are home to everything from big box retailers to specialty shops. The Independence City Council is made up of the Mayor and four additional councilors. This council meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month to discuss and decide city ordinances, policies, budgets, and other city business.
First settled in 1854, Independence was originally organized into a township. Named after Lake Independence – which in turn got its name from Fourth of July celebrations – the township was officially organized in 1858. The community maintained this form of government for almost 100 years, and in 1956 it was incorporated into the City of Independence that we know today.
