City History

Isanti County was established on February 13th, 1857. The Countyā€™s name was derived from the name of a large division of Dakota Native Americans, called Izatys ā€“ now called Santees. The area remained sparsely populated until the addition of the railroad in 1899. With the railroad more residents and more economic opportunities came to the area. Though Isanti County continues to be a primarily rural agricultural county, the population of the relatively small county currently sits just under 40,000.
