First claimed in 1842 by Henry W. Crosby, the territory that would become present day Lakeland began as farmland. Because of the location on the river, a ferry service was developed in 1848. By 1860, Lakeland was platted and boasted a post office, school, 14 stores, multiple hotels, and more. With thriving industries, and a strategic location on the river, Lakeland continued to prosper. Today, Lakeland maintains much of its original small town charm, and is home to approximately 2,000 residents.
