Nowthen was established as Burns County in 1876, when the post office began operation. The name Nowthen was chosen as a result of the use of the word at the end of the letter sent by the first postmaster Jim Hare. Though it took decades, Burns Township was incorporated into the City of Nowthen in 2007.
