The Nowthen City Council is responsible for all legislative and administrative policies and operations within the city. This five-member council consists of the Mayor and four additional councilmembers.
Nowthen was established as Burns County in 1876, when the post office began operation. The name Nowthen was chosen as a result of the use of the word at the end of the letter sent by the first postmaster Jim Hare. Though it took decades, Burns Township was incorporated into the City of Nowthen in 2007.
