City History

Originally incorporated in 1907, Sartell began as small town on the river that mainly relied on lumber and paper for its economic growth. The city was originally called the ā€œThe Third Rapids,ā€ a name given by French fur traders as they traveled up the Mississippi River. The name was eventually changed to Sartell, for Joseph B. Sartell, who arrived in 1854 working as a millwright in a local saw mill. In 1884 him and his sons began the Sartell Brothers Lumber Company that would eventually give the town a prosperous beginning.
