City History

The City of Durand was founded as the Town of Bear Creek at the same time that Pepin County was established in February of 1858. With a mix of Irish, German, and Austrian immigrants, the town grew immensely by the mid-1860s, and established the first Catholic Mission Church in the area, St. Patrick’s. The railroad was introduced to the area in the early 1880s, which prompted more growth and established the town as a commercial marketplace. Today, the City of Durand is home to approximately 2,000 residents and is a spectacular place to call home.
