The village is part of the Holmen School District. Public high school, middle school, and four elementary schools are offered in the district.

The City of Onalaska and Village of Holmen jointly operate a public transportation system. The system operates like a taxi service would.

 

Local Government

The Village of Holmen consists of a board of members. The Villiage President and 6 other community members make up the local government board.

 

City History

Holmen was settled in 1862 by Norwegian immigrants and was named Fredrickstown to honor the village’s blacksmith, Frederick Anderson. In 1946 it was incorporated as a village. The name was changed when Charles A. Sjolander opened the post office in September 1875. The name Holmen is a Norwegian word meaning small island.
