Onalaska offers bus transportation in portions of the community as well as shared-ride taxi services. The regional airport and Amtrak train services are also available in nearby La Crosse.

The government consists of the Mayor, City Administrator, and three separate aldermanic districts.

 

City History

Lumber and similar industries served as Onalaska’s base for the economy in its early days. The name for the city comes from the poem “The Pleasure’s of Hope” where the author Thomas Campbell refers to a fishing island village as Oonalaska.
