The Village of Somerset was first founded in 1856 when Samuel and Hud Harriman came to the Apple River in hopes of erecting a lumber mill. Not only did they build the mill, but also a general store, around which they platted the streets from which the village sprang up. Churches, schools, and other businesses followed, in addition to the railroad high bridge, and other modern amenities. Today, Somerset is home to about 3,000 residents, as well as a thriving economy, making it a phenomenal place to call home.
