Superior is served by the Superior School District, which has one high school, one middle school, and six elementary schools.
University Wisconsin-Superior is the local public liberal arts college and with Wisconsin Idianhead Technical College nearby as well.
The Duluth Transit Authority provides Superior and nearby Duluth, MN with fixed-route and dial-a-ride public bus service.
The City Council serves as the legislative branch of the City government, enacting ordinances, resolutions, approving the budget, setting policies and taking other actions necessary to properly govern the city.
In the nineteenth century, spurred by the prospect of lucrative shipping on the Great Lakes and the potential investment in the iron ore industry, businessmen from Chicago and Minnesota laid claim to the site which would become the city of Superior. They planned to layout a new city that would attract new European-American settlers. Lake Superior is the greatest Great Lake--the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area and the third largest by volume. The French explorers called it āSuperiorā, because it is above or higher than the chain of lakes.
Twenty-five years later the Northern Pacific Railway and other rail lines finally arrived, fulfilling the dream of a rail and water highway from coast to coast. Numerous grain, coal and lumber businesses formed in the same period.
Between 1890 and 1920, the city was heavily settled by migrants from the eastern United States as well as immigrants from over 15 countries.
