The real estate industry is hailing the federal tax credit for first-time home buyers, which was recently extended and expanded, as a key factor in boosting both Wisconsin's and the nation's housing markets. Third-quarter home sales released by the Wisconsin Realtors Association (WRA) showed a statewide gain of 5.8% in existing home sales versus a year earlier. If that pace holds, WRA estimates 90,600 homes will be sold throughout the state this year - - an increase of about 5,000 from a year ago. Through the end of August, the IRS calculates that 24,649 Wisconsin taxpayers have taken advantage of the home buyer tax credit.
