What to do with Mom and Dad's Stuff

It seems it's human nature to fill the space we have, whether it's 1,200 square feet or 4,000 square feet, we will fill every nook, corner, and closet. It also seems the people who think they have a lot of stuff are actually the people who have the same amount of stuff as everyone else. It's those people who say "Who me? I don't have a lot of stuff" that you have to watch out for! I think it was George Carlin who said you're stuff is stuff, someone else's stuff is junk!

When I work with families with parents who are downsizing, some just need to do the work of sorting themselves. Some, are so overwhelmed they become immobolized by the mere thought of having to sort through the lifetime of momentos. There's no right way to do it. But, if you are looking for a helping hand there is an entire cottage industry of professionals who specialize in working with older adults that can help. For example, a Daily Money Manager can help you sort through the paper and determine what to keep, a move manager can help you sort, pack and find an estate sale.

Check out this Wall Street Journal article about other tips on what to do with the stuff.
