Local Government

The Afton City Council consists of 5 elected officials who are responsible for the administration and oversight of all city actions, ordinances, and budgets. The council is made up of the mayor and four additional council members and meets on the third Tuesday of every month.

 

City History

Afton was first permanently settled in 1837, platted in 1855, and organized into a Township in 1858. The township, and later city, got its name from Robert Burnsā€™s poem entitled Sweet Afton. From the first post office built in 1854 to the arrival of the railroad to later growth and modernization, Afton has always maintained a strong and thriving connection to its natural resources. Today, Afton is home to approximately 3,000 residents and is a tourist destination for those wanting to experience Minnesotaā€™s beauty.
