In 1870, the northern most portion of the county was annexed to form Swift County, and at that time the present-day boundaries were officially set. Chippewa County is, and has always been, a primarily agricultural area. Today, many of the cities boast other industries including retail and manufacturing, and as a whole the county is home to just over 12,000 residents.
