The Heartland Express is responsible for providing public transit services to the residents of Chisago County. These Dial-a-Ride services are provided to all residents and are offered throughout Chisago and Isanti counties.
The Chisago County Board of Commissioners provides administrative and legislative oversight of all county operations and budgets. The five members of the board are elected by their respective districts and are responsible for all county policy making.
Chisago County was founded in 1851, and named after the Chippewa word “Ki-Chi-Saga” which means Fair and Lovely Lakes. Originally larger than it is in present day, the county was reduced to its current size in 1860. The area’s population grew as a result of increased Scandinavian – mainly Swedish – immigrants, who farmed the area until around 1890. At that time, Chisago County became known for it’s beautiful lakes and landscape and has maintained a vacation getaway status ever since. Today, just fewer than 55,000 residents call the county home.
