City History

Chisago County was founded in 1851, and named after the Chippewa word ā€œKi-Chi-Sagaā€ which means Fair and Lovely Lakes. Originally larger than it is in present day, the county was reduced to its current size in 1860. The areaā€™s population grew as a result of increased Scandinavian ā€“ mainly Swedish ā€“ immigrants, who farmed the area until around 1890. At that time, Chisago County became known for itā€™s beautiful lakes and landscape and has maintained a vacation getaway status ever since. Today, just fewer than 55,000 residents call the county home.
