What is now Kandiyohi County began as two completely separate entities. Kandiyohi and Monongalia Counties, both established in 1858, operated within the territory until 1870, at which time they merged in an effort to increase their economic resources. Kandiyohi comes from a Dakota word meaning “where the buffalo fish come,” which speaks to the area’s plentiful lakes and aquatic resources, which drew people to the area. Today, Kandiyohi county is home to both thriving commercial centers and peaceful resorts, allowing its 40,000+ residents to enjoy the best of both worlds.
