City History

Though the first settlers arrived in the area around 1850, Lake Elmo wasn’t established as a village until decades later. In the 1870s, the village became a resort destination, and commercial activity began to boom. Unfortunately, when streetcar lines were built through Mahtomedi to Stillwater in the 1890s, interest in the resort on Bass Lake waned. Over the next century, Lake Elmo maintained much of its rural charm, with slow population growth, but today suburban expansion is in full force. The city is currently home to approximately 10,000 residents, and continues to grow with new housing and commercial developments.
