City History

Named after the city of Ulm in Germany, New Ulm was originally settled in 1854 by a group of German immigrants looking for a place in which to honor their motherland. They built brick buildings modeled in the traditional German style, and with the arrival of the railroad, the community thrived. Though the Civil War brought the U.S.-Dakota War to New Ulm, the city survived. Today, New Ulm is characterized by its deep German roots, beer brewing, and a strong economy. With about 15,000 residents, New Ulm is a spectacular community to call home.
