Sunfish Lake does not have a city government, mainly due to the foundations upon which the city was found. Contract agreements with neighboring cities cover police and fire safety, roads are maintained by independent contractors, and an array of consultants provide the necessary services.
First incorporated in 1958 as a village, the city government has maintained a goal of keeping a rural atmosphere, and keeping the environment safe.
